Ashlyn Harris

Name: Ashlyn Harris
Nickname: Ash
Number: 24
Years with USWNT: 2011-Present
Club Team: Washington Spirit, Tyresö FF

Ashlyn Harris clawed her way back to being Hope Solo’s backup on the USWNT in 2015 after a stellar season in goal with the Washington Spirit in the NWSL. Her athleticism is unmatched, and her ability to make dynamic saves makes her fun to watch. She has been described as a “flying squirrel cheetah monkey” because of her flashy style. Her fearlessness in goal can sometimes get her in trouble (like any keeper!) but the more time she spends between the posts of the national team the more her decision-making improves.

To get a sense of the ways her aggressiveness off her line can end well and also give fans a few heart attacks, check out the save at 4:43 of this excellent montage of Harris saves. You have to love a good header save when your keeper’s well past the 18!

Ashlyn Harris is best known for

Coming back after injury: she suffered not one, but TWO ACL tears before playing a single game in college. Her quality was still evident, though, and her first game in college was an NCAA tournament game.

Harris is one of the most visible supporters of To Write Love on Her Arms (TWLOHA), a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting people struggling with self harm and suicidal ideation. She is also one of the more recognizable of the current players on the USWNT. Her style, ink, and penchant for selfies are just some of the ways she expresses her considerable personality. She seems especially close with Ali Krieger, another fan favorite. Here she is, explaining some of her tattoos.
