Kelley O’Hara is a dynamic, exciting player. She’s too good to be left off the USWNT, but is unable to fit into the style of play expected in the competitive forward pool, so she has played most of her minutes at fullback. With the addition of Crystal Dunn and now Megan Klingenberg to the squad, O’Hara’s playing time has gone down at the international level. This is a shame, because her competitiveness and spirit are off-the-charts, and with an attacking mentality in the back, she has the capacity to improve the play of the midfielders and forwards ahead of her. She played her college career at Stanford, just one of many Cardinals to make the USWNT. According to Pia, she learned to defend at the international level from former Stanford teammate Rachel Van Hollebeke (née Buehler). Her adorable face and fun personality have won her legions of fans and a few nice endorsement deals.
Kelley O’Hara is best known for:
Playing every minute of the 2012 Olympics, being obsessed with squirrels, and scoring a last-minute game-winning header with Sky Blue to beat the Portland Thorns in 2014. Ok, that last one is probably just me. It was a great goal.
Fun records: Season record for goals and points at Stanford, Hermann Trophy Winner 2009
Inspirational quote: When asked about mastering the notorious ‘beep test,’ O’Hara said “I am thinking about Finding Nemo: Just keep moving, just keep moving, just keep moving, moving, moving.”
Women’s World Cup 2015:
Kelley doesn’t seem poised to make a big splash in this year’s USWNT player pool, but chances are good that she’ll travel with the team. Look for her to be brought in late in games that need an attacking boost from the back.
